Music
Music is an integral part of each student’s education at St. Agnes.

Everyone takes music in freshman year. Electives are offered in junior and senior years and chorus as an elective activity is available to sophomores, juniors and seniors.

What do the students learn in music?
Two essential skills are developed in grade nine:
  • First is the ability to listen with alert ears and open minds to music performed by others.
  • Second is the ability to sing with energy, emotion and expression in a way that enhances both the individual’s vocal skill and the group’s level of artistry and expression. Singing is both a solo and team experience. Music reading skills, both rhythmic and melodic are taught in a systematic way at the level of experience appropriate for each individual student through an on-line program called Choraltech. All students have a Choraltech account and make steady progress in reading skills over the course of the school year.

Through listening and singing, the art of music is presented as a way people of all times and places have expressed their most important feelings and core identities. We listen to, discuss and perform music of past centuries, music of world cultures and the art music of the Western European tradition as well as music currently popular across the globe.
