French and Spanish are the languages offered in our school. French I, II and III and Spanish I, II, III and IV are available to students. The New York State Regents are taken after the third year in both languages. At the end of Spanish IV, students take the Advanced Placement exam for which they have been prepared and which will gain for them college credit. Native speakers of Spanish who take French will also be prepared outside of class time to take the Spanish Regents exam. All courses teach and practice the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Cultural information is also imparted. The Language Department, as members of the National teachers of language association, offer the students the opportunity to participate in the National French and National Spanish contest. At Christmas time, the Language Department sponsors the school's Christmas liturgy, which celebrates the Christmas message in the context of the school's ethnic richness. Students who maintain honor grades and fulfill other criteria are inducted into the National French or Spanish Honor Societies. |
