School History

St. Agnes
is a college preparatory school for young women rooted in the tradition of the Sisters of St. Dominic who founded our school over 100 years ago.
– Mrs. Susan Nicoletti, Principal

Founded in 1908 by The Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville, N.Y., St. Agnes Academic High School opened with two teachers in a one-room schoolhouse in College Point.  A year later, the School moved to 14th Avenue and expanded academic and commercial courses while students boarded in the “old” school.  St. Agnes received a temporary charter in 1910 and, two years later, held its first graduation with only 12 students.   On April 25, 1925, the School received its permanent legal charter by the University of the State of New York and remained co-educational for forty years.

In 1949, St. Agnes Academic High School became an all girls’ school. Today, it is a culturally diverse Catholic High School where young women develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning and a commitment to truth and integrity.   With a talented faculty and rigorous curriculum, students are challenged every day, in every class to meet their full academic potential.

In 2015, recognizing the enormous opportunities for young women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) St. Agnes completed the construction of a state-of-the-art science labs with plans to renovate additional labs.  An impressive partnership with the Science Research Program and SUNY Albany prepares students for research and future careers in STEM.

In 2016, St. Agnes partnered with Molloy College to create D.R.E.A.M Big (Dominican Roots in Education: St. Agnes and Molloy College.)  Students gain valuable insight about college and careers from accomplished leaders in higher education through a series of experiences, seminars and workshops at St. Agnes and at the Molloy College campus in Rockville Centre.

St. Agnes follows the Title IX regulations in the treatment of students and in personnel practices.  Chartered by the University of the State of New York, St. Agnes Academic High School is affiliated with the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
